Medical Waste Treatment and Disposal
The medical waste program offers hospitals and other generators of medical
waste a statewide solution the disposal problems faced by many hospitals. The
program utilizes three different technologies to render the medical waste non-infectious.
The methods are:
- Incineration
Incineration is only utilized for pathological and trace chemotherapy wastes.
Trace Chemotherapy includes any items generated in the preparation and administration
of cytotoxic/anitineoplastic drugs. Only items with 3% or less of the original
volume are accepted.
Incinerate only waste is accepted in special containers (supplied by Stericycle).
- Electro-Thermal Deactivation
Electro-Thermal Deactivation (ETD) is a process that employs a dielectric
oven where low frequency radio waves are used to generate a high strength
electrical field. Medical waste passing through this dielectric oven absorbs
the energy in the field, and heats very rapidly. This heat kills all potential
pathogens and renders the waste non-infectious. The waste is also shredded
to reduce volume by up to 89%.
- Autoclave
Autoclaving uses constant steam pressure to heat the medical waste. The waste
is processed for 30-40 minutes under steam pressure of 80 PSI (approximately)
at 300+ degrees. This process renders the medical waste non-infectious. Autoclaved
waste is usually compacted to reduce the volumes.
- The program is comprehensive, featuring the following elements:
- Potential substantial cost savings
- Yearly Waste Audits (upon request)
- Staff training and education programs on safe handling procedures
- Plant tours for customers (with an appointment)
- "Cradle to Grave" waste tracking. (matching the pickup manifest
with the Invoice)
